Jason Gerard DeRose: All I want for Christmas: USB3

All I want for Christmas is for USB3 to work in Precise, which currently it doesn't (upstream Linux issue as far as I can tell). So if you have USB3 hardware, please see if you likewise experience this bug:

USB3 card reader hangs/powers off when connected to USB3 port [NEC uPD720200]

The two USB3 host systems I have to test with both use the NEC uPD720200 USB3 controller, so this bug might be specific to that chip. However, if you happen to have hardware for which USB3 works under Ubuntu, please let me know what it is... because I'll likely buy it so I can demo with something that works.

Obviously USB3 working under Ubuntu "is a good thing". But my specific concern is USB3 is important for demonstrating the awesomeness of Dmedia to everyone from the cash-strapped indie film maker to Hollywood.

Now I know, despite what I consider mad amounts seemingly geeky street cred, Dmedia has been rather misunderstood in the free software community. Which is fine. But if you can take my word for it, Dmedia is profoundly important for two reasons:

  1. It strikes as hard as it can where the competition is weakest
  2. It makes people's lives better

And I can back that up with a little story. Today I landed some new Dmedia features in the Novacut daily builds, and shortly after I received a screenshot from someone who gave this build a spin on a real production set. This screenshot is from someone testing Dmedia on the set of a movie, or a TV series, or a commercial (I'm not sure which). Despite not even being quite ready for day to day use, Dmedia is viewed as ahead of the most state of the art competition there is.

And my motto is, "Winning is a good thing".
