Paul Tagliamonte: What's wrong with America ( part I )

As an American, I feel that it’s my right — nay duty — to point out absurdity in everyday life.

In this first part of a many part series, I’ll take a look at our stupid language of de facto choice, English.

This Germanic language, which has been bastardized with Latin through the years, has slowly sucked the life out of anyone foolish enough to study it.

As I sit here and distract myself from the English paper I should be writing, I notice some absolutely absurd things.

Who thinks this looks right? Warning: Programmers look away!

If you answered “English Majors”, you’re right!

That makes me sick. I want to throw up. I cringe when I look at that poorly formatted XML.

It’s like saying:

(foo[bar)baz]

Barf. I hate looking at that.

For some stupid reason ( which I avoided in the sentience a few above this out of my right to write any way I damn please ) it’s correct to say:

This is “a quote which ends a sentience.”

It’s unmatched! Stop it!

Open Sentience. Open Quote. Close Quote. Close Sentience. It’s really not that hard, damnit.

Let’s not even get into stupid spelling rules. That’s just crap.
